(CBS/AP) Five American soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb during combat in the western town of Ramadi, the deadliest single attack for U.S. troops in weeks, the U.S military said Thursday.

The five soldiers, assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, were hit by the bomb while "conducting combat operations" Wednesday in the town, which is a hotbed of activity by Iraq's insurgents, a statement by the Marines said. It gave no further details.

Their deaths came a day after another soldier attached to the Marines was killed in clashes in Ramadi, 60 miles west of the capital.

Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Five U.S. soldiers were killed when a homemade bomb exploded while they conducted combat operations in western Iraq, the U.S. military said.

The soldiers, assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), were killed yesterday in Ramadi, in Itaq's al-Anbar province, west of Baghdad, the military said today in an e-mailed statement. No further details were provided.

 

Meanwhile, in Ramadi — a center of insurgent activity 80 miles west of Baghdad — a roadside bomb exploded during combat Wednesday, killing five Americans, a Marine statement said. It was the deadliest single attack on U.S. forces since a roadside bomb killed 14 Marines in the town of Haditha on Aug. 3.

 

 

Six U.S. Marines Killed In Western Iraq

BAGHDAD -- The U.S. military said six Marines have died in a pair of roadside bomb attacks in western Iraq.

Four of the Marines died while conducting combat operations Thursday about 50 miles west of Baghdad. The other attack Thursday occurred while two Marines were on patrol not far from the Syrian border.

An Associated Press count shows at least 1,950 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003.
